Qinlong Mountain International Eco-City Project, China

The first ever BREEAM Communities interim certificate was issued to Qinglong Mountain International Eco-city in Nanjing in Jiangsu Province of China!

Nanjing with a population of over 8 million, has long been a major centre of culture, education and research. Qinglong Mountain International Eco-city regeneration project is spread across 360 ha and comprises of 11 residential buildings and supporting houses, office, retail, education and healthcare buildings.

It is expected that the construction of Qinglong Mountain International Eco-City Project will facilitate the overall reconstruction of the local area and provide guidance for local development through space study of the surrounding area. The project prides itself on understanding the great importance of consultation, respecting local characteristics, listening to the needs of the public and encouraging public engagement with the development. China Jinmao decided to utilise the BREEAM Communities scheme on the development because it was felt the scheme could help to satisfy the demand of local residents to the greatest extent.

Key credentials of the development include;

  • Architectural design that fully considers passive design measures. These include sunshade, daylighting, and ventilation, to reduce the regional energy consumption from the source and reduce the dosage of the follow-up equipment.
  • Commercial buildings in the planning area utilise a ground source heat pump station, to improve energy efficiency.
  • The planning area adopts photovoltaic power generation and a photo-thermal system; the use of these systems can provide new energy for the area and reduce traditional energy usage.
  • To ensure safe movement around the development, pedestrian walkways and vehicle roads are separated for to allow safe and efficient travel of users of various transportation modes.
  • Consultation and analysis was undertaken on the existing ecological features within the site and measures for their protection implemented.
  • Specific measures have also been developed to enhance the ecology and biodiversity of the site and its surrounding areas, delivering the living environment as a natural landscape with lush grass and vegetation.
  • Utilization of existing buildings on the site has been maximised.
  • Water demands on the site will be minimised through the water efficiency measures
  • A scientific strategy for water conservation has been produced to help occupiers develop a good habits of water use
