BRE announces BREEAM In-Use Update – Autumn 2019 – in response to market drivers and international expansion
BRE – the world’s leading building science centre, today announced the planned update of BREEAM In-Use, which is scheduled to be released in Autumn 2019.
The update will see many improvements to the current scheme and include an expansion of the its capabilities to assess all types of residential properties. This includes both multifamily developments, such as apartment blocks, and individual homes. The updates will enable clients for the first time to assess the performance of their entire residential portfolios, demonstrating its sustainability directly and through other benchmarks such as GRESB.
The update will streamline the BREEAM In-Use process for all building types undergoing assessment, delivering the value associated with BREEAM In-Use certification more efficiently. It will also allow the BREEAM In-Use scheme to better respond to market drivers, such as the need to assess and certify the sustainability performance of operational residential buildings, and align with other certification and reporting systems. The release will also bring clients and assessors a fully updated technical manual and refreshed digital platform.
To date BREEAM In-Use has been used to assess more than 3,500 non-domestic building projects in over 30 countries worldwide. The extension of the scheme’s scope to also assess residential buildings comes in response to growing market demand. BRE Global has been coordinating with key clients and partners in the USA and Europe to develop the expanded scope to provide a science-based sustainable improvement solution and certification for residential buildings that are not currently covered by existing international green building programmes.
Shamir Ghumra, BREEAM Director, says: “The update will help BREEAM In-Use take the next leap forward not only in terms of different asset types but also in the growth of international adoption. The updated platform will be easier to use and provide more value through insights to clients, investors and users of the scheme.”
Launching in the Autumn of 2019, the updated BREEAM In-Use scheme will continue to be available internationally, providing a sustainability framework to assess the operational performance of existing commercial and residential buildings.
